AN APPEAL TO THE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CITY OF KOŠICE
(a reaction to non-inclusion of the uranium topic to the programme of the City Council meeting on 15 April 2013)
7 April 2013 00:07

We came to the City Council meeting on 11 February 2013 to express the worries of the citizens of Košice about the plan to mine and process uranium in the city and its neighbourhoods.

We demanded from you to discuss in the next City Council meeting the plan to mine and process uranium in Košice and to adopt a resolution that would refuse the scandalous memorandum signed by the Ministry of Economy and the mining company (both its contents and the way how it was signed) and a resolution that would introduce a moratorium on uranium mining for at least the next 50 years.

With a disappointment we have found out that you have not identified with our worries and that you have not included the uranium topic to the programme of the next City Council meeting at all.

Appealing to your responsibility for the future healthy Košice, the city whose inhabitants you are as well, we demand you to include the uranium topic to the programme of the next City Council meeting (and to discuss the topic in the commissions of the City Council, too).

The minister of environment of the Slovak Republic and the mayor of Košice have stated in their joint-declaration that the city of Košice will preserve its right to veto a geological survey of radioactive materials and minerals (the original proposal for amendment of the geological law had assumed this right to be left out).

We demand from the Košice City Council to exercise this right by adopting a resolution for an immediate discontinuation of the geological survey since it is evident that the mining company is not doing the survey for scientific reasons but for the prospect of future uranium mining that was refused by a resolution of the City Council already in 2006. (The ambition to mine uranium is evident from all the statements of the company as well as from the memorandum signed with the Ministry of Economy).

To sum up - we demand from you:
1. To refuse the memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Economy and the mining company.
2. To adopt a resolution introducing a moratorium on uranium mining for at least the next 50 years.
3. To adopt a resolution for an immediate discontinuation of the geological survey in the affected area.

We will come to the City Council meeting to support you.
